Privacy Policy

      Short version: Your location stays in your browser's local storage and is never stored on our servers. We transiently process your IP address through Cloudflare infrastructure. We plan to add advertising in the future, which will require a cookie consent banner before activating.
    

1. Who we are

OpenWindow.live is a free web tool that provides real-time ventilation recommendations based on outdoor weather and air quality at your location. The service is operated by Max Maggio ([email protected]).

2. Data we collect and legal basis

We collect as little data as possible:

Location coordinates — requested once via your browser's Geolocation API. Used only to fetch local weather data. Not persistently stored on our servers (Cloudflare Workers transiently process the rounded coordinates, then discard them). Stored in your browser's local storage until you clear site data or change your location. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR — necessary to provide the service you requested.
User preferences (indoor temperature, sensitivity, unit, language) — stored only in your browser's local storage. Never sent to our servers. Retained until you clear browser data. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR.

We do not collect names, email addresses, device identifiers, or browsing history. We do not use session tracking or user profiling.

3. How we use location data

Your browser coordinates (latitude and longitude) are sent to our Cloudflare Worker API endpoint solely to retrieve outdoor temperature, humidity, wind speed, and air quality index for your area. The coordinates are rounded to two decimal places (~1 km precision) before being used as a cache key. The response is cached for 5 minutes at the edge — no personal identifier is stored with the cache entry.

4. Third-party data providers

To provide the service, we query these external APIs with your rounded coordinates:

OpenWeather (Privacy Policy) — weather data provider.
AQICN / World Air Quality Index (Privacy Policy) — air quality data provider.

These requests are made server-side through our Cloudflare Worker, so your IP address is not directly exposed to these providers.

5. Advertising — future use of Google AdSense

OpenWindow.live currently displays no advertising. We intend to add Google AdSense in the future. When activated, Google AdSense will use cookies and web beacons to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. Before activating AdSense, we will implement a cookie consent banner (CMP) compliant with IAB TCF 2.2, and advertising will only be personalised if you explicitly consent.

Once live, you will be able to opt out of personalised advertising via the consent banner, Google Ads Settings, or aboutads.info. Legal basis (when active): Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR — consent.

6. Cookies

OpenWindow.live itself does not set cookies. Your preferences are stored in browser local storage, not cookies. If and when Google AdSense is activated, it may set cookies for ad personalisation as described in section 5 — and only after your explicit consent.

7. Infrastructure and international transfers

The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages and uses Cloudflare Workers as an API proxy. Cloudflare may log request metadata (IP address, timestamp, URL) for security and performance purposes, subject to Cloudflare's Privacy Policy.

Cloudflare operates a global network of data centres, including outside the European Economic Area (e.g. United States). These transfers rely on Cloudflare's Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) and its participation in the EU–US Data Privacy Framework. Your IP address may therefore be transiently processed on infrastructure outside the EEA, but is not persistently stored by us.

8. Your rights (GDPR)

If you are located in the European Economic Area, you have the following rights regarding your data:

Access and deletion — All data stored locally (location, preferences, language) can be cleared at any time via your browser's "Clear site data" setting.
Data portability — Your local storage data can be inspected via your browser's developer tools (Application → Local Storage).
Object to processing — You can deny location access in your browser and manually enter a city instead.
Withdraw consent — Once the cookie consent banner is in place, you can withdraw or update your advertising consent at any time via the banner's settings.
Lodge a complaint — You have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. In Italy: Garante per la protezione dei dati personali. In other EEA countries, contact your national data protection authority.

Since we do not persistently store personal data on our servers, there is no server-side data to request or delete. For questions about data processed by Google (AdSense), contact Google directly or use their privacy request form.

9. Children's privacy

OpenWindow.live is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect any changes. Continued use of the service constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
